Storyville

Storyville have been playing traditional jazz around Perth since 1973, and they turn up in uniform. The band takes its name from the New Orleans district where jazz was born, and the music follows suit: clean, catchy tunes with a clear melody and a beat that gets feet tapping, plus the odd modern number when the occasion suits. The usual line-up is six: trombone, cornet, and clarinet or sax out front, with drums, tuba and piano or banjo keeping the beat behind them. Vocals go to whichever player fancies a turn. They can go down to four players, two rhythm and two melody, or add more. Expect some rough-edged humour and a bit of audience involvement. Over the years they've played dances, weddings, BBQs, river trips, concerts, church services, funerals, pub gigs and one divorce, and they've taken the band to Japan and Europe.
