Cole Porter and Duke Ellington standards, brought up to date, are the backbone of a set from Kate, a Melbourne singer who accompanies herself on jazz guitar. The twist is her take on 1980s pop, gothic and otherwise. Songs from Madonna to The Cure get lifted out of their original setting and reset as swing jazz. It's elegant and a little unexpected, and it works well at a cocktail hour where guests only recognise the tune halfway through. Kate usually plays solo, though bigger ensembles are available, bringing in players on piano, sax, trumpet, drums or bass. She takes weddings, corporate events, private functions, festivals and special occasions.
